Myeloma

Getting diagnosed with myeloma

You usually start by seeing your GP if you have symptoms. Or your GP might arrange to see you if you have had an abnormal blood test result.  Symptoms of myeloma can be vague and could be due to other less serious conditions. Your GP will ask about your symptoms and examine you.

They will then decide whether to refer you for further tests or to a specialist.

Seeing your GP if you have myeloma symptoms

See your doctor if you have any of the possible signs and symptoms of myeloma.

Referral to a specialist for symptoms of myeloma

Your GP should arrange for you to see a specialist if you have symptoms that could be due to myeloma.

Screening for myeloma

Screening means testing people for early stages of a disease. There is no screening programme for myeloma in the UK.

Tests for myeloma

Your GP or specialist might arrange for you to have tests. These include blood and urine tests, a bone marrow test, x-rays and scans.
